Population: City of Spokane: 195,629 Spokane County: 417,939 The largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis on the northern tier, Spokane is located in eastern Washington, 18 miles west of the Idaho state line and 110 miles south of the Canadian border. Spokane serves as the transportation, retail, medical, educational and entertainment hub of the Inland Northwest, with over two million people in a 36-county region encompassing eastern Washington, northern Idaho, western Montana and parts of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. We enjoy a true four-season climate and are surrounded by a rich natural bounty. Situated between the Rocky and Cascade mountain ranges, Spokane's annual precipitation totals less than 17 inches, 50% less than what the Seattle area receives. Our growing season lasts six months, from mid-April to mid-October. Summers are dry and warm, perfect for water skiing in over 80 lakes and rivers and mountain biking on green ski hills. The area's 13 ski facilities often enjoy a 5-6 month snow season, so dust off your skis and snowboards! Spokane ranked #8 in Reader's Digest's "Best Places to Raise a Family" and Golf Magazine's April '99 issue referred to Spokane as the "golf capital of the Pacific Northwest." Outside Magazine featured the region's assets in a special report, and Inc. and Money have both highlighted our quality lifestyle, cost of living and business climate. Much of urban Spokane lies along the banks of the Spokane River at an elevation of about 2,000 feet above sea level. Residential areas have spread to the crests of plateaus on either side of the river, with elevations up to 2,000 feet. Click the links below |
